bubs about town Partner, Sara, a Primary School Teacher shares her playhouse passion with you...What child can resist the temptation to slip into a cardboard box or create a fort in the living room out of chairs and blankets? I’m sure most of us have fond memories of building our own private space to play in when we were young. Whether it was to have a tea party or constructing a castle with lego, building a fort was always exciting and exhilarating as you knew that the space was entirely your own.
Back when I was young my play also used to involve disappearing with friends to make up our own activities and we were left to just get on with it. But in today’s unsafe world, children’s activities are programmed and there’s always an adult in charge. So having a playhouse in the backyard provides children with space to grow physically, emotionally and intellectually, but still under the safety of your watchful gaze. A playhouse provides a creative play environment, kids embrace having their own space to form a club or host a tea party and you can be sure that the first thing kids do when they get in a playhouse is say, 'It's my house; you can't come in,'" "Then they say, 'I want you to come in.'" That's the playhouse covenant: Kids rule. Children use playhouses to try on adult roles, cement friendships, and exercise their imaginations along with their bodies, inventing games that are more complex and fascinating than anything found on a video screen.
Playhouses come in a range of materials, sizes and additional features. From simple pop up fabric ones (from $29.95 at Toys R Us), to easy construction playhouses with tunnels and pop up holes as pictured, the good thing about these type of houses are easily packed away. But for more permanent playhouses; plastic kitset houses and fully constructed wooden playhouses are also available and come in a huge range of prices based on the additional features ordered. Bunnings and Toys R Us carry a great range and many different types can be found online. Just remember playhouses are much more that a toy, they are a fabulous imaginary experience.
