I already owned two baby carriers prior to buying the "Ergo". I mainly used a baby sling which I found provided only limited back support when my baby girl turned 4 months old and my other carrier never really felt comfortable to us both. I felt strongly that we should both continue with the benefits of ‘baby wearing’ but also felt that I desperately required better support in order to prolong the life of my back and posture.
So I did extensive research, tried the Ergo Carrier and it provided everything we needed offering hands free closeness like no other.
From premmie to pre-schooler, Ergo's front, back and hip wearing design allows you to carry up to a maximum weight of 25kgs. The ERGO also supports a correct sitting position for your baby's physical development eliminating compression on your baby's spine, this having been endorsed by Chiropractor, Dr Bridie Cullinane who specialises in pre/post-natal and pediatric care. Overall I found it the most comfortable and physically supportive baby carrier on the market as it places the majority of the weight of the baby on the parent's hips which is the most important weight bearing part of the body, your baby is then supported in a natural, seated position which does not put strain on the crotch or spine.
My ERGO became perfect for hikes, a quick dash out to the shops and wherever a stroller finds it hard to go. It has a handy front pouch that can quite easily fit baby essentials. For those breastfeeding mothers, I found that I could feed quite discreetly and most importantly using the Ergo has contributed to a closer bond with my daughter.
She continues to enjoy our close contact even now at 11 months and always falls asleep whilst out for a ride.
One minor downside is that I’ve not been able to feel completely comfy with it when used as a back carrier but I suspect that is more about my own physical limitations in getting the carrier on in this position, if I had someone to help me then I think I would love it as much as the front and side positions.
The Ergo Baby Carrier is made out of 100% cotton canvas on the outside, padded with 100% cotton batting and lined with a 100% cotton poplin fabric. It comes in a range of colours with a contrast lining and sunshade / sleeping hood that can be used as and when it's needed. An instruction DVD comes with your Ergo and it explains everything there is to know about using your Ergo Carrier.
There are many accessories that can be purchased separately to enhance the ergo carrier, such as an infant insert which is specifically designed to fit inside the Ergo Carrier in the front position. It can be folded to cradle your baby's head and body in a sling-like position to provide that swaddled feeling that so many babies prefer. The insert allows you to keep your baby close and even nurse as you go about your day and the sleeping hood can be used as a sun shade when necessary. It is used for babies who are not yet able to hold up their heads well - usually by 3 to 5 months, babies do not need the insert.
Other accessories include suck pads to be attached to shoulder straps, a back pack that can be worn independently or attached to the ergo carrier, a front pouch, waist extender and a tote bag big enough to fit the carrier in when it is not being used.
If I were to purchase only one baby carrier, the ERGO would be it, I cannot give enough positive comments about my ‘Ergo Carrier’. Although there maybe short periods when a pouch or sling maybe more convenient I feel that overall the ERGO was the best value for us as it continues to grow with your baby. The ERGO is available online or at Babies Galore from approximately $159 for the carrier alone.
