Funky Kids Umbrellas

Adults look forward to spending “a nice day inside”. But, when you’re little, and the world’s so huge, you don’t want to be trapped inside – all you want to do is get outside and explore! If your little ones are anything like ours there is nothing more fun than splashing through puddles on a rainy day, except maybe for splashing mum and dad on a rainy day! And now you can add to the fun with these funky kids’ umbrellas. There are numerous brands, styles and themes available and they are fantastic fun and practical too, some even have matching gumboots and raincoats.

With simple mechanisms that will make them easy for small hands to work you can find these umbrellas in a range of designs and materials, from 100% nylon like our featured ladybird design from Kidorable or as a clear PVC design like our featured ducky umbrella from Bugzz. The great thing about the PVC umbrellas is that children can watch the rain coming down without getting wet! Also the birdcage umbrella shape will make sure your little one stays dry.

When looking for a fun umbrella for your little one ensure they contain the following safety features; a child sized plastic crook handle and child safe ball ends on the spokes that won’t pull off. These funky umbrellas are not recommended for children to use under three without adult supervision.

So when is an umbrella not an umbrella? When it is one of the two pictured funky kids umbrellas up for grabs in our extra special August Add-On-Competition! Kids R Kool in Warners Bay have donated these two umbrellas’ each worth $22.95 each and to be in for a chance to win check out our competition page for details on how to enter.

Angelcare Sound & Movement Monitor

With our SIDS article and Red Nose Day last week we have had many emails from local mums expressing their immense sympathies for Racheal and her family with the loss of Lilli to SIDS. Many of these mums are owners of the Angelcare Sound & Movement Monitors and this is what one member and mum Katie had to say:

I was always aware of the possibility of SIDS and it hitting so close to home has petrified me.

When looking for a monitor for our son everyone told me not to go pass the Angelcare Motion Monitor. It actually sensors movement and within 20 seconds of nothing being detected an alarm goes off. It actually went off twice within the first 3 months of his life as you can imagine my husband & I flew into his room to find him safe but breathing very shallow.

It has made me wonder why this and other monitors which are recommended for babies with sleep apnia are not recommended by the SIDS association – or maybe it is but it was never mentioned by any of the babies stores which we visited.

I know you cannot guarantee anything however for the first 12 months of my son’s life this monitor will be used every night – my dad even bought one for when we stay with them because none of us can live without it now – I even took it camping with us.

My personal opinion is that true SIDS is when you follow every recommendation, no pillows on their back, no bumpers, no doonas, no teddy’s and they are still taken too soon it has to be something within their own little bodies which may be under developed that stops them from breathing and in my heart I believe that this sensor monitor could possibly go a long way in helping to reduce the number of SIDS deaths in our precious little babies.

Actually my little man was sleeping yesterday morning and the alarm went off my husband and I flew in there to find him at the other end of the cot smiling up at us, he had moved off the sensor pads and it didn’t register him. Later that morning we attended a close friends little girls birthday party & I was telling them the (Lilli’s) story and we all felt stupid but we were all crying because we are all mothers now & although we don’t know the family our hearts break for them because it is something that we couldn’t even imagine having to go through.

In our close group of girlfriends there are 8 couples and 11 kids aged from 8weeks to 3 years (BBQ are becoming very hectic J) and we ALL have the Angelcare monitor & we were discussing how we couldn’t live without it I just wish it was compulsory for newborns!

We here at Bubs are also huge fans of this monitor and so are re-publishing an earlier member review of this fantastic product, read on to find out more about this monitor.

When we were getting our nursery together for the arrival of our first baby, there was one item at the top of our list that was a “must have”, The Angelcare Sound & Movement Monitor. Many friends and family members had purchased this monitor and they had told me that it gave them “peace of mind” when their little ones were sleeping. Why is this monitor so great? You just have to look at the features:

• Under-the-mattress Sensor Pad detects every baby's movement baby makes
• Alarm sounds after 20 seconds if no movement and even the slightest breathing movements are detected
• Adjustable sensitivity
• Battery or AC adapter operated
• Optional 'tic" sound to hear baby's movements
• 8 channels to minimize interference
• Automatically converts to battery in case of power failure
• Sound lights to see and hear baby's sounds
• Low battery indicator
• Practical soothing night-light
• Choice between voice activation or continuous sound reception
• Nursery room temperature display on the parent unit
• Vibration option on parents unit when alarm (dependent on models)

As you can see, not only does it monitor the child’s breathing & movement but the latest models also give the room temperature, so you can dress/cover your baby appropriately. The monitors range in price from around $200 (standard) to $300 (deluxe), and are available from all major baby/children’s retailers.
